Message from the Head...
Welcome to the Department of Physics of IIT Roorkee. The department is actively involved in teaching and research programs. The course-structure of each program is designed to impart both theoretical and practical knowledge of the subjects to train students for basic research and to face challenges from the industry. The students of all programs carry out projects/dissertation for two semesters and they also go for internship to industry and reputed Indian and foreign institutes to get exposure of current research and technology. The department also runs several computational/programming courses to impart students the programming skillset. Both UG and PG students get opportunity to perform experiments in research laboratories of the department for their project/dissertation work. The faculties of the department are actively engaged in theoretical and experimental research in different frontier areas of research viz. Atmospheric and Space Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nuclear Physics, Photonics and High Energy Physics.

Explore the Department website to learn more about our academic programs, research activities and achievements.

Volcanic erruptions over Hunga-Tonga lead to unusual effects
This study investigates the effect of the Hunga-Tonga volcanic eruption (15 January 2022 at about 4:15 UT) on the infrared emission of nitric oxide (NO) and neutral density in the upper atmosphere of the Earth.

Tunable Skyrmion-Antiskyrmion Dynamics in Co/Pt Nanocontacts for Spintronics
We demonstrate controlled nucleation of topologically distinct skyrmion-antiskyrmion metastable states, skyrmioniums, and stable skyrmion pairs by leveraging inter spin-texture interactions using two 30 nm nanocontacts with varying separations

Controllable Frequency Tunability in Spin Hall Nano-oscillators
We demonstrate how effective magnetization-driven frequency tunability enables spin Hall nano-oscillators to operate across distinct frequency regimes, facilitating diverse functionalities within a single device. This tunability also allows precise control over their mutual synchronization states.

Enhancement and control of a coherent LSPs through pump-pulse engineering
The study tackles practical challenges related to detuning between the pump and transition frequencies of quantum dots (QDs). Employing adiabatic rapid passage technique with a linearly chirped Gaussian pulse emerges as an effective strategy for robust population transfer within QD energy levels.
